How to choose your first beginner clothing sewing projects
Some tips for choosing your very first sewing project are:
- Start with a pattern with minimal straight seams
- Try to avoid a lot of curves and fancy details like pockets, buttons or zippers for your very first project. You can move on to these as you gain experience.
- Use an easy-to-work-with fabric, like cotton, twill, or linen.
- Read through the pattern directions several times and ensure you understand them before starting.
- Make a toile. ( A practice garment made with cheep fabric. A toile is also used for making adjustments prior to sewing the actual garment to ensure a proper fit.)
- Think about making something that you will look forward to wearing.
Some Easy Beginner clothing sewing projects
A simple elastic waist band skirt or pants
A simple elastic waist band skirt or pants are an easy sewing project to get started with because, they have few straight seams, and not many finicky details to get stuck on.
When I started sewing one of my very first sewing projects was a simple skirt. It helped me practice cutting and sewing. But, at the same time, it was not too overwhelming.
If you start with something small like an elastic waist band skirt it will be a lot less frustrating than trying to make a lined jacket (for example). You’ll get there, it just takes time.
A Scarf
A scarf is another very easy project to start with, especially an infinity scarf. It has a simple seam and you can practice your cutting skills as well.
You can even make two or three, they aren’t big, and give them away as gifts.
Pick a fabric that makes you happy and get sewing!
A simple tee shirt
A basic cotton tee shirt can be a great project to start on. It is very simple but will give you some experience with making a neck band and sleeves.
You can choose a fun fabric and make it your own.
If you’re really crafty, you could even design something on a Cricut Machine to put on the front or back once you’ve sewn the shirt. I definitely want to do this in the future for myself.
Another option that could make it unique is to try tie dyeing it once your finished sewing it.
