I recently looked online and came across the cutest dog bed on Anthropologie. It was adorable so I decided I would dig out my sewing machine to make a luxury dog bed that was a dupe!
This is a simple tutorial that you can make even if you are a beginner. I’m going to walk you through each step and show you how you can make this luxury bed for your pet.
Step #1 Gather Your Supplies
To start you’re going to need a few supplies. I’ve listed them below with links to what I have.
Supplies:
- 2 – 3 m of Fabric ( I used flannel fabric )
- Sewing Scissors ( Click here to shop my scissors )
- A measuring tape or sewing ruler ( Click here to shop my ruler )
- Fabric Marking Tool ( Click here to shop my chalk marker )
- A sewing machine ( Click here to shop the Baby Lock Jubilant )
- Optional A gathering foot ( Click here to shop my gathering foot )
- Polyfill ( Click here to shop polyfill )
- A sewing needle ( Click here to shop sewing needles )
Step #2 Cut Out Your DIY Luxury Dog Bed
For the next step, you’re going to cut out two rectangles of fabric and then a strip of fabric 5″ wide and length about double the circumference of the rectangles.
You will need to make your rectangles large enough to hold your dog. You can use a bed they already have for a guide or measure your dog. Add extra fabric to allow the bed to fluff up with the fill. I would add two or three extra inches plus an extra 1/2″ for seam allowances.
Seam Allowance
When I draft my own patterns I usually use 1/2″ for my seam allowances to make it easier to add measurements together, instead of the typical 5/8″ you will find in most patterns.
Step #3 Sew the Long Strips of Fabric Together
Next, you’re going to sew the long strips of fabric together (right sides together) so that they are all joined together into a circle. This will be the ruffle.
Step #4 Gather The Ruffle
Next, you will fold the long strips in half and using a gathering foot or a basting stitch gather all the way around along the cut edge. Stitch only about 1/4″ from the edge so you won’t see the gathering stitch once the bed is made.
I used both the basting stitch method and the gathering foot method and found that using the gathering foot went much faster because the fabric was thick and harder to gather by hand. But, you can do whichever method works best for you!

Step #5 Pin and Sew
Next, you will pin the two rectangles (right sides together) with the ruffle sandwiched in between them all the way around the edge. The unfinished edge of the ruffle should be aligned with the unfinished edges of the rectangles.
You can use a serger or pinking sheers to finish your edges if you’d like but I didn’t bother since it would be hidden.
Then sew 1/2″ around the edge of the rectangles ensuring you are keeping all pieces aligned. Leave a 5″ opening so you can turn the bed right side out and stuff with filling.
Step #6 Fill the Bed with Polyfill
Next, you will turn the bed right side out and fill it with polyfill. Then hand-stitch the hole closed.
Filling Ideas
I used fill from an old pillow for my dog bed but you can also use fabric scraps, old blankets or anything soft to fill your bed.
Now you’re dog can enjoy their new bed!

So adorable!
Thank you!
What a fantastic idea for a diy dog bed! I haven’t seen in a while and my dog does need a new bed. Thank you for the dog bed pattern.
You’re welcome! Glad you found this helpful!
Looks so cute! Do they really use it though. My cats prefer card board boxes at the end of the day 😄
Haha, sometimes the simple things are the best! As long as they like it that’s what matters.
