It’s that time of year again, Valentine’s Day! I wanted to make an easy sewing project for Valentine’s Day that you could do with kids or for yourself. So, I decided to make a heart shaped heating pad.
I personally enjoy making things that I will actually use and that are practical as well. I also think this project could be an awesome gift idea. I use my homemade heating pads all the time, and I love them. I’ve made several in the past of various shapes and sizes, but in keeping with the theme of Valentine’s Day, I made this one heart shaped.
So here we go!
DIY Valentine’s Day Heating Pad (Easy Sewing Project)
Step 1: Make Your Heart Shaped Sewing Pattern
First things first, I start with making a heart shaped pattern piece used to cut out my fabric.
It is so simple, just draw a straight line about 11″ long and then draw a half heart shape with a curved ruler or free-hand it.
Note: your heart shape does not have to be perfect. Just do your best. You can free-hand it if you’d like. My first try at free-handing it didn’t look as good as I wanted, so I ended up using my curved ruler to help shape it better.
Step 2: Cut out Your Fabric
Next, you’re going to want to write on your pattern piece to cut 2 on the fold. Then place the straight side of your pattern piece next to the fold of your fabric, and cut it out. Cut out two pieces on the fold.
I used scrap of flannel that I had on hand. I find flannel fabric works well because it’s soft and has a bit of thickness. It also works well in the microwave.
Step 3: Place Wright Sides of the Fabric Together and Pin
Next, you will need to place the two heart shapes wright sides together and pin them as pictured.
Step 4 : Sew the Pieces Together
Now, you will need to sew the pieces together but leave about a 3 – 4 inch opening so that you can turn the heart wright side out and add your filling (as shown in the next step).
I used as narrow of a stitch setting as I could when sewing the heart pieces together. This will prevent the rice or filling from coming through the stitches.
Step 5 : Turn the Fabric Wright Side Out and add the Filling
The next step is to turn the heart shape right side out. You can also snip your curved edges to help the fabric curve better around the top of your heart.
Using a funnel or whatever way is best for you, fill the heart about 1/3 full of rice or lentils.
TIP: In this step, you can also add some essential oils, such as lavender, to your heat pad to create a sort of aromatherapy heat pad.
Step 6: Sew up the Opening
The final step is to top stitch the opening shut. I sew as close to the edge of the fabric as I can so that the top stitching is not too noticeable.
If you’d like, prior to filling the heart, you could top stitch all the way around except for the opening and then just join the top stitching after filling in the heart.
How to Heat up your Heat Pad
It’s super easy to heat up your homemade heat pad. Just stick it in the microwave for about 1 – 2 minutes and Voila!
This is one of my favourite sewing projects to make. You can make them in almost any shape and size to suit your needs.
