You typically sew a chain stitch on a coverstitch machine. A regular two needle coverstitch or a three needle coverstitch. You can also make a narrow double stitch by adjusting the needle placement on the machine.

Should I buy a Coverstitch Machine?

This will depend on how much sewing with knits you do. If you are someone who really enjoys wearing and sewing knit garments or projects, a coverstitch machine is definitely worth looking into.

I do not regret buying my coverstitch machine. It is a very handy machine even if you are someone who makes a lot of adjustments to knit garments.

Uses of a Coverstitch Machine

You can use a coverstitch machine for hemming garments or decorative stitching. It is also used for the garment construction of a lot of activewear.

How to get started with your coverstitch machine

If you want to learn how to coverstitch, it is a lot like using a sewing machine or a serger but with a few different tricks.

A coverstitch does not cut your fabric as with a serger. You need to pre-measure your hem and press before coverstitching. Some sergers will convert into coverstitch machines but not all will. Check with your owners manual if you’re unsure if your serger will convert into a coverstitch machine.

Tensions are important when coverstitching. If you are having issues with skipping stitches, tensions may need to be adjusted. Refer to your owners manual for instructions on adjusting your tensions. (Tip: Make sure to note your original tensions on your machine before adjusting them in case you need to reset the machine back to the original tensions.)

I recommend getting a bunch of different scraps of fabrics and testing them out before starting on a garment. Specifically test out your coverstitch on the fabric you plan to sew to make sure the tensions are correct.
