You can make money from sewing, you can save money by sewing and you can make something that is perfect for you!
Let’s find out how to learn to sew!
1. Take some online courses and ask for help to get started
First, if you are wanting to know how to learn to sew I would recommend starting with some free or paid online courses. Websites like Craftsy or Skillshare have some cheep courses you can take to start. You can also start off with Youtube and get some good free content to get you started as well.
It’s important that you do what you are learning, otherwise you won’t develop your skills. So if you are doing some courses online to learn about sewing take action as you are watching. Taking action will help you remember what you are learning as well. Also, you can get a notebook and take notes on the things you feel are important to remember.
Another way to get started with sewing is to ask a friend or someone you know to teach you to sew. I’m sure they would love to teach you the art of sewing. I think this is the best way to learn when you are starting out because you have someone to help answer your questions and work with you.
2. Find a simple pattern you like to start with
When you start sewing it’s important to start with something easy so you can develop your skills with less frustration. There a lots of things to learn when you begin sewing and you want to make sure your can learn the skills of sewing while making your project.
You can move to harder projects as you gain experience but I would recommend starting with something simple like a skirt or pillow cover and maybe buy extra fabric to have if you make a mistake and need to cut out another piece.
3. Practice using your sewing machine and learn how it works
Your sewing machine is the tool you will likely be using the most. you need to learn how the features work and how to thread your machine and your bobbin.
Take some scrap fabric and play around with the different stitches, learn how to backstitch and change the stitch length. Watch some instructional videos on your specific model.
I do not however, recommend playing with the tension as this can cause problems unless you absolutely need to change it. If you do need to adjust the tensions then make sure to write down what they are set at before making changes that way you can go back to the original settings if needed.
4. Buy the right sewing tools
When you start sewing you will need a few tools to help you get the job done such as, scissors, pins, a sewing machine, etc. Don’t go too crazy at first buying a bunch of things that you may or may not use, just start out with the basics and add to your collection as needed.

5. Learn about the types of fabrics
The next thing you will want to do is to learn about the different types of fabric and how they work with patterns. You may want to go to your local fabric store to feel the fabrics and ask the workers about what you need for your project so you can get an idea of how to choose the right fabric.
It will take some time to know what works well with different patterns. At first, stick to the recommendations on the pattern but eventually you’ll be able to experiment with different fabrics.
Ultimately, if you want to find out how to learn to sew it will take some time and practice. Don’t give up on your first try. You will make mistakes but you will be successful as well. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the learning process. Don’t rush through it or you could cause yourself more headaches.
