You will want to use your judgement and be safe about allowing kids to use sharp objects. If they are really young you don’t want to hand them a needle and thread and let them go to it but, use wisdom and let them learn age appropriately. These kids projects will be best for kids ages 7 – 12 years of age.

Below are 10 Simple Sewing Projects for Kids

The first simple sewing project for kids I’d like to introduce is sewing on buttons. Maybe you have an old scrap piece of fabric lying around or an old shirt with buttons that you can cut off and have them sew back on. Maybe you have some old buttons from your Grandma or some extra buttons from clothing you bought. Let them sew away with a needle and thread to learn how to make them secure and even challenge them to measure between each one and mark their fabric so they can sew the buttons on in a straight line. Learning to sew buttons can be a great way to help kids start to learn a practical skill at a young age. You never know when a button will come loose or fall off and you’ll need to sew it back on your clothes.

Another simple sewing project for kids can be to learn how to sew doll clothes. You would likely want to start with something simple like a doll skirt or scarf. You could use some scrap fabric or just buy some cheep cotton for this project. This can help your child learn to sew in a seam and also learn how pattern pieces fit together.

My Favourite Kids Sewing Projects

One of my favourite kids sewing projects is bed buddies or rice bags that you can heat up in the microwave. There are a variety of ways to make these and lots of different patterns you can use to be creative with these. But, this is something simple but also useful to make. You can even add essential oils the rice to make them smell nice when heated. They are good to have if you child is sick or just cold. You can heat them up and put them at your child’s feet or anywhere they like to keep them warm or you can even use it yourself. These are so useful in lots of different ways.

A doll blanket or even a regular blanket can be another useful project for kids to sew. It is another item with simple straight seams that they can learn and practice on to develop sewing skills and learn how to cut fabric as well as use a sewing machine. A patchwork quilt that isn’t too big is a way to be more creative with fabric and colours to make the blanket fun. But, you can also just get some cozy fabric to sew together to keep it more simple if you’d like.

A decorative pillow case can be another fun kids sewing project. They can cut out fun shapes and add buttons or other fun things to a pillow case to make it unique and they could even do some embroidery or hand sewing on a pillow case as well. This is a good simple sewing project for kids to learn on and can be fun to let them be creative in their own way. Make it as decorated or simple as you want.

Linen napkins is a fun sewing project kids can try. They can be tie-died as well to add some extra colour and creativity. I especially love linen for napkins because they have such a beautiful texture and can add lots of fun to your table scape. An idea is to have your kids make napkins for a tea party or a birthday party to make it feel extra fancy.

A kids apron is another useful item for kids to sew and this will start them sewing their own clothes. They can add a pocket on the front to learn how to sew pockets or you could have them leave the pocket off to make it more simple. Have fun picking out fabric with a pretty print or texture and enjoy being creative with your kids.

A headband is another project that would be fun for kids to learn to sew. You could use fun fabric and even have them sew on some cute buttons to add to the style. There are lots of ways to be creative with headbands. I would suggest my kids make a matching headband and skirt to create a cute matching outfit for spring or even Easter.

Another simple kids sewing project to make can be a simple bag that they can use as a purse or play diaper bag etc. There are tons of cute patterns and variations of bags for kids to learn how to make online. This is another item that is easy to be creative with and make into something unique.

A cute and fun sewing project for your future seamstress is to make some DIY pattern weights. There are so many variations of this project that you can create and they are nice to have for sewing. I usually recommend using pattern weights if you are cutting with a rotary cutter not scissors, as scissors lift the fabric and cause the weights and the pattern piece to move. It depends on the situation of course but these are a fun project to create if you are interested in something like this.

In conclusion, if you want to introduce your kids into the sewing world, don’t wait! There is something they can learn how to do now. Have fun and be creative, that is the most important part! Help them enjoy the process and feel the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands and they will want to learn more. Sewing is a wonderful skill to learn and can be very helpful in everyday life.
