Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a Serger vs. Sewing Machine? Well, let me clear that up for you.
A serger is used for finishing edges of a garment. A Sewing machine is used for the construction of the garment.
Let me explain.
Differences between a Serger vs. Sewing Machine
In the below graph you will see some of the differences between a serger and a sewing machine.
![]() | Sewing Machine |
Used to finish the edges of fabric to keep fabric from fraying | Used to construct a garment |
Multiple threads that loop around the edge of the fabric | Only two possibly three threads used to create a line of stitching |
Contains a knife used to cut the fabric or clean up the edges of fabric while serging. | Does not use a knife, the fabric must be pre-cut |
Stitching stretches well | Stitching does not usually stretch unless you use a zig zag stitch |
Useful when sewing with knit fabric | Not so useful when sewing with knit fabric unless you use a zig zag stitch |
Do I need to buy both a Serger and a Sewing Machine?
I highly recommend getting both a serger and a sewing machine if you plan to do a lot of sewing for either yourself or others. Trust me, it is well worth it. However, if you wish to start with just a sewing machine and then buy a serger later on, it is doable.
The benefits of having both a serger and a sewing machine is that you can often use a serger for keeping fabric edges from fraying. You can also use pinking sheers if you prefer but it will take longer. A serger really does create a more professional looking garment in the end.
Price comparison
How does a sewing machine compare to a serger price wise?
Well, in my experience you can usually get a serger and a sewing machine within the same price range. This of course depends on the model and make of both the sewing machine and the serger but I find they can be close in price.
There are high and low ends of the spectrum for both sewing machines and sergers. Either machine can range from just a couple hundred dollars to thousands. Do your research before buying your machine to ensure you’re getting the most out of it.
