If you’re new to sewing or you’ve been sewing for a while but you’ve never tried shopping online for sewing supplies, this post is going to be a deep dive into the best places to shop for fabric and sewing supplies!
These are the places I shop online for my sewing supplies. I rarely go into fabric stores in person as I live about 2 – 3 hours from the nearest shop. Online shopping has become prevalent in recent years, and now more sewists are shopping online than ever before!
This post should give you a great idea of where to shop online and how to do it!
What to Know Before Shopping Online for Sewing Needs
Here are a few tips before diving into the online shopping world for your sewing supplies and fabric:
1. Know Your Fabrics
If you’re shopping online for fabric, you want to make sure you’re knowledgeable when it comes to the type of fabric you are buying. For example, you’ll need to know what the difference is between a cotton and a linen.
Also, fabrics can comprise of different percentages of fibres, such as 90% cotton and 10% spandex. You should be able to understand what this means and how it will suit the pattern you plan to make with it.
If you are not familiar with fabrics yet, the best solution for you is to order swatches. Most online fabric stores have the option to order a swatch for a low cost. Order several swatches in the type of fabric you are looking for and compare them.
2. Know Your Brands
Another good tip for online shopping is to know what brands are good quality. This comes from experience but you can also research what brands work for other sewists before purchasing a product.
Knowing your brands makes it easier to choose the best products. Once you’ve bought several pieces of fabric you’ll start to see what is good quality and what isn’t.

Fabric-store.com is a great place to shop if you’re looking specifically for 100% linen fabric. They have great quality linen in a variety of colours.

Have you ever considered looking for fabric on eBay? It may seem odd, but you can often find some unique pieces of material or something you may not be able to see on other sites because it’s discontinued.
You can buy both pre-owned fabrics and new fabrics on eBay. Be sure to check them out if you’re having difficulty finding what you’re looking for!
