Below are the best sewing machines for kids to learn on and why:

If you’re serious about teaching your child to sew, I don’t recommend getting any of the toy sewing machines they won’t do what you need and will be easy to break. You want their starter sewing machine to last and to perform the functions that they will need.

I would recommend children ages 8-12 can start learning to sew.

Here are a few features to consider:

  1. Straight Stitch
  2. Zig Zag Stitch
  3. Various sewing feet
  4. A Buttonhole Feature
  5. Low price $100-$250

(You can click on the names of each sewing machine to purchase or price compare)

Baby Lock Zest

The Baby Lock Zest is my favourite starter sewing machine. This is a great beginner sewing machine for kids. The Baby Lock Zest is very easy to use and includes 15 stitches and a buttonhole feature.

The Baby Lock Zest comes at a very reasonable price point and will allow your child to do everything they need at the beginner stage of sewing.

Baby Lock Joy

The Baby Lock Joy is another easy-to-use sewing machine. It comes with 19 stitches and includes a buttonhole feature. The Baby Lock Joy is another awesome choice for kids!

BROTHER XM2701

The BROTHER XM2701 is a great beginner sewing machine. It is also priced reasonably and this sewing machine includes 27 stitches and 6 sewing feet.

This is a small lightweight machine and should have all the features a kid would need to have like a zig zag stitch and and a stretch stitch as well as an auto-size buttonhole.

BROTHER XM1010

The BROTHER XM1010 is another good option for kids to learn on. The BROTHER XM1010 has only 10 stitches and 4 sewing feet which is less than the BROTHER XM2701 but may be all that is needed for a kid to start on. The BROTHER XM1010 also has an auto-size buttonhole.

BROTHER CS5055

The BROTHER CS5055 is a computerized sewing machine with 60 built in stitches, 7 sewing feet and an LCD display. The BROTHER CS5055 also has an auto-size buttonhole.

This machine would also be great for kids to start on as it is pretty simple but also is a little more fancy than the BROTHER XM2701 and the BROTHER XM1010.

Janome Easy-To-Use Sewing Machine

The Janome easy-to-use sewing machine is a fun coloured sewing machine that will capture your child’s attention. It also comes in other colours and includes 15 stitches and 4 sewing feet as well as a buttonhole feature.

JANOME 2212

The JANOME 2212 is another good option for kids to use for sewing. This sewing machine comes with 12 stitches including a button hole and 4 presser feet. This seems like a good starting machine that will last for quite a while, you probably wouldn’t need to upgrade from this machine for years to come.

I hope this article is helpful to you and gives you some great options for purchasing the best sewing machine for your child.
